3 out of 5 stars.
I would like to thank the author Jordan Elizabeth for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.
Ms Elizabeth approached me via Goodreads, to enquire whether I would be interested in reading for review. I would like to make it clear this was a “cold call” and we aren’t friends or acquaintances, so I can assure you this is indeed an unbiased review.
Overall, this was an interesting and engaging story. It got my ‘one more chapter’ mantra going into the wee hours most nights. The Mixture of different eras and characters worked well and helped draw the reader into the addictive tale. I did have some minor quibbles about the dialects and speech patterns used as I felt some of them were a little too modern for the character who used them… But it is a seriously minor quibble and could just be me being overly pedantic. This is a YA book after all, and so such artistic licenses are allowed.
And, not that this is a bad thing, I found the path the story would take (except for the ending) rather obvious. But I do that with pretty much all stories I read and it’s only the good ones I bother reading to the end. So you can see this was a good one!
I also found the ending a little too rushed and abrupt for my liking. But, having thought about it a bit for a few days now, feel it did fit – in its own way- and so I’m not that upset with it. Maybe the book hangover I’ve gotten from it is to blame? But the abrupt ending did mean I gave one less star than I was going to. Sorry.
Would I recommend this book to others?
Yes I would- just brace yourself for the ending. It’s good… just abrupt. But all in all a very enjoyable YA book I would encourage any YA fan to have a read as the story captures -no pun intended- and deals with some very interesting Moments in America’s history.
Would I buy this book for Myself?
As an eBook, I probably would. I found it very engaging and enjoyable so would proudly own it and give it pride of place in my eBook shelves.
In summary: Overall a well- written, enjoyable and engaging story I feel fans of the YA genre the world over would enjoy. Check it out today.
Until next time,
Janis.
